Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said he had declined an invitation from US President Donald Trump to visit Washington when the two leaders met during G7 Summit in Canada.
PM Modi addressing a rally in Odisha spoke about it about it for the first time and added that he chose to visit the 'sacred land of Lord Jagannath' instead of US.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in a statement regarding the recent Modi-Trump phone call had mentioned that the prime minister could not accept the invitation due to a pre-existing schedule, and invited Trump to visit India for the Quad Summit, likely later this year.
Meanwhile, Trump had to leave the meeting midway amidst rising hostilities between Israel and Iran.
What Did PM Modi Say?
Addressing a rally in Bhubaneswar, Modi said, "I was in Canada for the G7 Summit when US President Trump had called me and invited me to Washington for a discussion and lunch. I thanked him for the invitation, saying I have to visit Odisha, the land of Lord Jagannath. I humbly rejected his invitation."
PM Modi participated in the first anniversary function of the BJP's maiden government in Odisha during the day and launched development projects worth over Rs 18,600 crore.
Trump's invitation comes at a time when he also invited Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir for a lunch and discussion at the White House.
Trump has long maintained that he dissolved the India-Pakistan Tension that continued since Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor to eliminate terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.
But India had rejected the claims, stating that it was a decision taken between the armed forces of the two neighbouring nations and there were no trade talks that Trump had also claimed as reason behind the ceasefire.
If PM Modi had agreed to visit US it would be the first time since the India-Pakistan hostilities took place in May 2025. The Munir-Trump meeting took place on June 18 and it was on the same day later that Trump changed his narrative and confirmed that India and Pakistan reached ceasefire by themselves without US' intervention.
Modi-Trump Phone Call
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with President Donald Trump and set the record straight that India had paused strikes on Pakistan during Operation Sindoor following a request from Islamabad and not due to mediation or offer of a trade deal by the US.
In a 35-minute phone call with Trump on Tuesday, Modi briefed the US President on Operation Sindoor, launched by India against terror sites in Pakistan, and made it clear that it has never accepted any third-party mediation and will never accept it in the future.
This was the first conversation between Trump and Modi after the launch of Operation Sindoor last month. The two leaders had spoken after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack when Trump had expressed his condolences and supported India in the fight against terrorism.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in a statement on the Modi-Trump phone call said, 바카라PM Modi clarified that no topics related to trade were discussed in connection with Operation Sindoor. He asserted that India has never accepted third-party mediation and will not accept such mediation."
The Prime Minister told Trump that India had targeted terror sites inside Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan on the intervening night of May 6-7.
He made it clear that India바카라s action was 바카라measured, precise and non-escalatory바카라.
PM Modi also told Trump that he had declared that bullets from Pakistan will be responded to with cannon balls (goli ka jawab gole se diya jayega).
Misri said the Prime Minister told Trump that he had received a phone call from US Vice President J D Vance on the night of May 9, cautioning him about a 바카라big strike바카라 by Pakistan.
PM Modi told Vance clearly that if Pakistan did carry out such an attack, India would respond with an even stronger counter action.
PM Modi said India responded strongly to Pakistan바카라s attack on the intervening night of May 9-10, which led to heavy losses to Pakistan바카라s military infrastructure and rendered their airbases inoperable.
PM Modi told Trump that India바카라s strong response to Pakistan forced it to urge India to stop the military campaign.
The Prime Minister told Trump clearly that in this entire chain of events, there was no discussion of an India-US trade deal and there was no reference to US mediation between India and Pakistan, Misri said.
PM Modi made it clear that the decision to halt military action was taken in direct talks between India and Pakistan using the existing channels and at the insistence of Pakistan.
Prime Minister Modi made it clear firmly that India will not accept any mediation in its dealings with Pakistan, and there is political unanimity on this issue.
