"It was a good start to the tournament," Zverev said after the win. "I'm happy with the three-set win, usually it's more four or five sets in first matches. Hopefully it will continue like this and it will be a fun two weeks here."
His Dutch opponent De Jong is ranked 88th in the world and had to go through a five-setter in the first round before prevailing over Italy's Francesco Passaro 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 7-6 (1), 6-1. Before this match, De Jong had faced world number one Jannik Sinner in the Italian Open, where he lost 4-6, 2-6 in the third round.
This will be De Jong's second consecutive second-round appearance at French Open and he will seek to go at least one better this time, though it won't be easy against the world number three. Zverev and de Jong have faced off once before, in Hamburg in 2024 on clay. The German easily beat De Jong 6-2 6-2 in the first round then.
